These classes are for students who are planning to go to university or higher education, or need to take the IELTS exam for any other reason. The aim of the course is to revise and learn the exam structure and prepare participants for all papers of the exam and to develop their test-taking and language skills to achieve a comfortable pass. Some general skills will be practised, such as strategies for taking the IELTS exam and all other learning, techniques to build confidence in speaking and time management skills in examination.
In reading, students will learn and practise essential skills, such as identifying topic sentences, guessing meaning from context, distinguishing fact from opinion, skimming, scanning and detailed reading and analysis skills. Some other skills are just as important, for example approaching and locating written and visual information or understanding visual information and essay writer’s views and arguments. Some exam techniques will also be practised, for example, reading question techniques and identifying alternative meanings and distracting information.
In writing there will be a greater focus on register and style in a variety of text types. Students will practise writing at speed under pressure. The planning stage of writing will be focused on too, learners will be familiarised with and use mind-maps, linear notes and scatter diagrams. Developing and presenting arguments, organizing and expressing facts, opinions, arguments and supporting information are also looked at.
In listening analysing and understanding the types of tasks and questions and techniques in prediction, paraphrasing and different accents will be focussed on. Essential exam skills, such as identifying key words, paraphrases, and distractors will be practised, as well as simultaneous listening and writing.
In speaking several different areas will be focussed on, such as giving personal and general information, organizing notes on a random speaking topic, taking part in discussion and expressing opinions, comparing and contrasting information. You will be practising how to communicate your ideas clearly, as well as reflect on your mistakes. So explaining common errors, pitfalls and intonation and understanding common speaking errors and pronunciation are also practised.
